FEATURES

What CalmStart offers

Bookmarks in flexible columns

Drag and drop folders into columns to build the layout you want.

Search bookmarks and the web

Search selected folders or all bookmarks, optionally with web search. Results appear in a dropdown or filter the existing start page.

Made to your taste

Adjust fonts, colors, spacing, and backgrounds. Profiles let you switch between saved start-page layouts.

Sync through the browser

Settings and layout sync through Chrome's built-in extension storage. If a layout conflict occurs, CalmStart keeps local recovery backups.

More than bookmarks

Optionally show most visited pages, recent bookmarks, recently closed tabs, and tabs from other devices.

No detour through servers

No advertising, no analytics, and no data sent to the developer's servers. Bookmarks and layout stay in your browser.

Questions and answers

Does CalmStart send my bookmarks to a server?

No. CalmStart does not transmit bookmarks, browsing data, settings, or layout to developer-operated servers and uses no advertising or analytics services. Settings and layout are kept in the browser's extension storage. When sync is on, your browser account provider syncs them between your devices.

What is synced between browsers?

Supported settings and the portable layout, meaning folder titles and references to your bookmark folders. Open folders, folder appearance, favorites, recently opened links, and profiles sync only if you turn on the matching switch. Your full bookmark database is not synced.

Why does CalmStart request its permissions?

Bookmarks to show and arrange your folders, favicons for the icons, storage for settings and layout, and tabs to open links in your chosen tab mode. Font settings power the font picker. Top sites are read only for the optional "Most visited" section, and sessions only for "Recently closed" and "Other devices".

Where does CalmStart come from?

CalmStart is based on the open-source Humble New Tab Page by Ian Billingsley. Like the original, it is released under the MIT License, and the source code is on GitHub.
